A genuine sheepskin rug is a lifetime investment in comfort. Unlike synthetic alternatives, natural wool contains lanolin, a self-cleaning wax that repels dirt and bacteria. To maintain that "cloud-like" loft and ensure your hide remains a centerpiece of your home, you need a professional maintenance routine.
1. The Daily Refresh: Shake and Brush
The easiest way to care for your sheepskin is also the most effective.
- The Shake: Take your rug outside weekly. A vigorous shake removes surface dust and restores the air pockets between the wool fibers.
- The Brush: Use a metal-bristled sheepskin brush. Brushing prevents matting and keeps the fibers separated and soft.
Expert Tip: Always brush your sheepskin while it is completely dry. Brushing wet wool can stretch and damage the follicles.
2. Spot Cleaning: The First Line of Defense
Accidents happen, but a full wash should be your last resort.
- Blot immediately: Use a clean, dry cloth to soak up spills. Never rub, as this pushes the liquid deeper into the leather pelt.
- Damp cloth: Use lukewarm water and a specialized pH-neutral wool detergent.
- Local drying: Air-dry the spot away from direct heat or sunlight.

3. How to Wash Your Sheepskin (The "Deep Clean")
Many premium organic hides prefer a professional dry clean to protect the leather backing. However, many of our collections are robust enough for home care.
If machine washing:
- Cycle: Use a "Wool" or "Delicate" cycle at 30°C or less.
- Detergent: Use only non-bio, pH-neutral wool wash. Never use fabric softener, as it strips the natural lanolin.
- The Golden Rule of Drying: Never tumble dry. Lay the sheepskin flat on a drying rack. As it dries, stretch the leather by hand to prevent it from shrinking or becoming stiff.

4. Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Underfloor Heating: Direct heat can cause the leather to crack. We recommend using a rug pad if you have heated floors.
- Direct Sunlight: UV rays can "yellow" white sheepskins and fade dyed hides, such as those in our Shop Our Nordic Sheepskins Here
- The Hairdryer: Never try to speed up the drying process with heat. It will turn soft leather into hard parchment.
